Australia’s August reporting season is now underway, with investors turning their attention from macroeconomic headlines to what ultimately matters most over the long term: company earnings and outlook statements.
This reporting season arrives against the backdrop of uncertainty in the economy. We expect strong results from major resource companies following a favourable year for commodity prices, while many consumer-facing and housing-related businesses may disappoint and are likely to deliver more cautious guidance as elevated interest rates, higher operating costs and ever-changing tax settings continue to pressure margins.
As has been the case in recent years, thanks to algorithmic trading and ETF flows, reporting season is likely to bring heightened market volatility. Share prices can move sharply as companies either exceed investor expectations or disappoint, making this one of the most important periods of the year for active investors.
Montgomery partners – Australian Eagle Asset Management and Montgomery Lucent – will be analysing results against their models, reassessing portfolio positions and identifying opportunities where the market’s reaction differs from their assessment of a company’s long-term value. We’ll be sharing their insights throughout the season here on the blog and across our social channels.
Reporting season is also an excellent opportunity for investors to deepen their understanding of the businesses they own, and those on their watch list. With hundreds of companies reporting over a compressed period, keeping track of key announcements can be challenging, but preparation is invaluable.
